Dr. Louis A. Rubenstein, age 85, of Ocean Springs, Mississippi, passed away peacefully on June 13, 2026, in Ocean Springs. He was born on April 8, 1941, in Greenville, Mississippi, and was a native of Shaw, Mississippi.
Dr. Rubenstein was preceded in death by his parents, Harry Rubenstein and Sara Seligman Rubenstein; his brothers, Irvin BeRubenstein, Edwin Nathan Rubenstein and his wife, Francis Rubenstein, and Leonard Elliot Rubenstein and his wife, Betty Rubenstein.
He is survived by his devoted wife of 56 years, Vickie Sweeney Rubenstein; his sons, Jay Michael Rubenstein and his wife, Eden Ziegler Rubenstein, and Ryan Lesley Rubenstein and his wife, Dana Darnell Rubenstein; and his beloved grandchildren, Isabella Elise Rubenstein, Sydney Elaina Rubenstein, and Nash Steele Rubenstein.
Dr. Rubenstein dedicated his life to the service of others through medicine, military service, faith, and family. After earning his undergraduate degree from Tulane University, he attended the University of Mississippi School of Medicine, where he received his Doctor of Medicine degree. He completed his residency training at the University of Alabama at Birmingham and went on to specialize in Family Medicine.
During the Vietnam era, Dr. Rubenstein proudly served his country in the United States Air Force as a Flight Surgeon. He also served as a navigator and flew more than fifty combat missions. He continued his military commitment throughout his life and retired from the Inactive Reserve at the age of 65.
Following his military service, Dr. Rubenstein established his medical practice in Ocean Springs in 1970. For more than fifty-five years, he cared for generations of families throughout the Mississippi Gulf Coast. His commitment to compassionate, patient-centered care made him one of the region’s most respected physicians. He practiced medicine through 2021 and was affiliated with Singing River Hospital and Memorial Hospital at Gulfport.
Throughout his distinguished career, Dr. Rubenstein received numerous honors and held many leadership positions. He was named Physician of the Year in 2010 and served as Chief of Staff and Chief of Medicine at Ocean Springs Hospital. He was President of the Mississippi Academy of Family Physicians, President of the Jackson County Medical Association, and a Trustee of the Advisory Board of the University of Mississippi Alumni Association. He was a member of the Mississippi Academy of Family Physicians for more than forty years.
Dr. Rubenstein was Board Certified by the American Board of Family Medicine and was both a Diplomate and Fellow of the American Academy of Family Physicians. His contributions to medicine and healthcare leadership left a lasting impact on countless patients, colleagues, and communities across Mississippi.
A man of faith and fellowship, Dr. Rubenstein was a member of Congregation Beth Israel and was a proud member of Alpha Epsilon Pi Fraternity. While his professional accomplishments were many, his greatest pride and joy came from his family. He was a loving husband, father, and grandfather whose wisdom, kindness, generosity, and unwavering dedication enriched the lives of all who knew him.
Dr. Rubenstein’s legacy lives on not only through his family, but through the thousands of patients he cared for, the physicians he mentored, and the community he faithfully served for more than five decades. He will be remembered for his compassionate heart, his dedication to healing, his devotion to family, and his lifelong commitment to making a difference in the lives of others.
His family finds comfort in knowing that his remarkable life was one of purpose, service, and love. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
A graveside service will be held at Southern Memorial Park on Monday, June 15, 2026, at 11:00 am.
