Dorothy Meadows "Dot" Fortner, age 96, of Gulfport, passed away on Monday, November 19, 2018.
She was a native of Greene County, MS, and was a former resident of Hattiesburg before moving to the coast. Mrs. Fortner lived a healthy and happy life and was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother.
She touched the lives of many people with a loving heart, and her laughter was contagious and brightened all our lives. She was the spiritual anchor of our family and was a longtime member of Grace Memorial Baptist Church, where she was very active in the senior adult ministry.
Mrs. Fortner had a big heart and will be remembered for her generous and loving ways. Her joy in life was making people happy and spending time with her family and friends. Dot loved to cook and bake and take food to those who were unable to cook. Her happiest moments were spent at Christmas with her family gathered around, opening gifts on Christmas Eve, and sharing gumbo.
She worked for 25 years at Memorial Hospital where she had been chosen as Employee of the Month and Employee of the Year. After retirement, Dot volunteered in the hospital gift shop. She was a lifetime member of the Elks Ladies Auxiliary 978 where she was chosen Elk of the Year. She was also a member of American Legion Joe Graham Post 119 Ladies Auxiliary and Order of the Easter Star Chapter 51, where she received her 25 year pin.
She was preceded in death by her first husband, H.B. Meadows and her second husband, Livingston Fortner; children, Willa Jean Baragar and Bettye Jo Fairley; and her 5 brothers; and great grandson, Reeves Fairley.
She is survived by a daughter, Sheila Morrison; sister, Ellen McGowan; grandchildren, Ricky Parker (Donna), Hiram Parker, Kim Fairley, Wendy Parker, Deborah Gregory, Brent Fairley (Melinda), Stacey Ladner, Courtney Rahmel (Beau); 15 great grandchildren, 21 great-great grandchildren, and 1 great-great-great grandchild.
Visitation will be on Saturday, November 24, 2018, at Grace Memorial Baptist Church from 1-2 PM. The funeral service will be at 2:00 PM in the church. Interment will follow in Evergreen Gardens Cemetery.
