Dorothy Morris Brand, formerly of Biloxi, age 91, just weeks from her 92nd birthday, passed away Thursday, November 26, 2015, early Thanksgiving morning in Hampstead, North Carolina.
Mrs. Brand was a native of Gulfport, Mississippi where she was born and lived until 1954 when our family was transferred with dads work to Raleigh, North Carolina. In 1998, along with her daughter, Paula and her family, mom and dad returned to live in Biloxi. Mom always wanted to return ""home"". She was a current resident of Stonebridge and Woodbury Care Center in Hampstead, North Carolina. She previously had lived at Gulfport Care center in Gulfport, Mississippi.
The family would like to express a very sincere thanks to the doctors, nurses, aides, and staff for their wonderful care of our mother. She loved and appreciated them and rewarded them every day with hugs and kisses. They called her ""Miss Pretty"" because she was so loving.
Mom graduated with honors from Gulfport High School in 1946. She began working for F.W. Woolworth and then worked at Salloum Department Store in Gulfport. After marrying, mom was a homemaker, creating a beautiful home and fabulous meals that we enjoyed every day. She loved to cook and bake and she kept a beautiful home and yard. She loved bread pudding with lots of raisins, anything made with peaches. She loved the movies Dr. Zhivago and Gone With the Wind.
Mom was a beautiful dancer excelling in acrobat and tap. She studied dance with the well known coast teacher, Jacqueline Fontaine, who tried to encourage her to go to New York and audition for the Rockettes.
She was christened Methodist as a baby but changed to Baptist after marrying. She belonged to Bay Vista Baptist Church in Biloxi.
Our mom did volunteer work for Wake Memorial Hospital in Raleigh giving 30 years of dedicated service.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Kidney Foundation.
She was preceded in death by her parents John Murphy Morris and Myrtle Heitzmann Morris, her two infant sisters, her brothers John Morris Jr. and his wife Edith Downing, Edward R. Morris ""Bud"" and his wife Mary Lou Bennett, Norman Lee Morris, nephews Dr. Norman Lee Morris, Jr. and Michael Morris, and niece Victoria Morris. Also preceding her in death was her first husband Louis Paul Trull and later Thomas Walter Brand, Jr.
Survivors include her daughter Paula Brand Cannon of Hampstead, N.C.; her son Thomas Walter Brand of Columbus, N.C.; sisters-in-law, Dorothy Morris of Gulfport, Martha Morris of Gulfport, Marvene Brand of Brandon, and Joyce Davis of Montgomery, AL.; her granddaughter Laura Cannon Hartfield and her husband Major Michael Hartfield, USAF; two great-grandsons Noah and Jacob Hartfield. Laura and her ""boys"" were mom's heart and they will miss her terribly. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews. Mom will be missed very much by everyone who knew her. We love you.
