Derrell Rex Brown, age 62, of Gulfport, passed away on December 5, 2015, in Gulfport.
Mr. Brown was born on February 20, 1953, in Birmingham, AL. He was blessed with a tremendous musical talent, and as a young man in Birmingham, he discovered and nurtured his passion for music. In the early 1970s, he moved to the Mississippi Gulf Coast to play with Zapata's Revolution at the Fiesta Club in Biloxi. He then formed a band with Johnny Hozey and George Mills. In 1982, The Music Co. with Jerry Fisher, vocalist with Blood, Sweat, and Tears, was formed. The home base for this band was the Dock of the Bay in Bay St. Louis. He was a part of this band of local all-stars for almost two decades. Derrell was also blessed with a tremendous talent for musical production. He owned Demo Man Productions, a recording studio, and was on staff at Studio in the Country in Bogalusa, LA. Derrell performed weekly for many years at Timothy O'Sullivan's with Eddie Miller, James Ducker, and Johnny Hozey. He performed often over many years with The Rochelle Harper Band. In recent years he performed during the spring and summer with Eddie Miller and James Ducker at Darwell's in Long Beach. Up until his passing, he performed with Johnny Hozey and Laurin Munsch in a group called Primetime and with a band called Monsters at Large featuring some of the elite musicians on the Gulf Coast and in New Orleans. He will be greatly missed by family, friends, and the musical community.
Derrell was preceded in death by his parents, Gordon L. and Shirley Brown, and by his brother Gordon L. Brown, Jr.
He is survived by his wife of thirty-one years, June Huhner Brown, and three sisters-in-law, Shelia McMahon, Sandra DuFrene, and Marilyn Legendre.
A memorial account in Derrell's name has been established at Hancock Bank and the family appreciates donations to this account at any branch.
A visitation and celebration of life service will be held from 12:00 noon until 2:00 PM on Saturday, December 19, 2015, at the RIEMANN FAMILY FUNERAL HOME, 11280 Three Rivers Road, Gulfport.
