Obituary

Dennis “Denny” Michael Lau, 80, of Gulfport, Mississippi, passed away on Friday, March 6, 2026.

Denny was born in Highland Park, Michigan, in 1945. He attended Our Lady of Sorrows and later Farmington High School, graduating in 1963. He went on to earn a Bachelor of Arts degree from Northern Michigan University.

Denny was a devoted father to his three surviving children: James “Jimmy” (BettyJo) Lau, Amanda “Mandy Beth” (David) Eisman, and Alicia “Bug” (Ty) Lau-Henry. He shared 29 loving years of marriage with his wife, Bonnie (Lucas) Lau. He was also a cherished brother to Diane (Lau) Elnick and Marica (Bill) Lau-Jones, and a beloved uncle to Becky, Greg, Curtis, Kelly, and Dana. He was a proud grandfather to Dustin, David (Lelah), Drew, and Duke, and Tia & Taryn Henry; and a great-grandfather to Eliza, Mavis, and Alister.

An avid marksman and muzzleloader enthusiast, Denny spent many years deeply involved in the muzzle-loading community. He participated in numerous historic trail reenactments and traditional camping rendezvous. His artistic talents were also recognized early on, including having artwork featured on the July 1968 cover of Muzzle Blasts magazine.

From a young age, Denny was passionate about both history and art. Although he was unable to join the U.S. Air Force, he remained a dedicated patriot throughout his life. He worked for many years as an automotive illustrator, often showcasing his work at the Detroit Auto Show. Denny also achieved his certification as a pilot and spent many happy years flying his 1948 Cessna 170, tail number N4155V.

Denny was a man of many talents who deeply loved his family and friends. Those who knew him often described him as a man with the biggest heart, someone who loved fully and generously.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Harvey C. Lau and Bette Thornburg-Lau; his beloved wife, Bonnie Louise Lau; and his daughter, Lori Lynn Lau.

No formal services will be held. The family suggests honoring Denny in his own style: pour a strong rum and Coke and listen to some John Denver.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Joseph Hospice of Gulfport, Mississippi.
