David Norman
Johnston, Sr.
Apr 10, 1963 — May 29, 2026
David Norman Johnston, Sr., cherished husband, father, grandfather, brother, and devoted member of his community, passed away peacefully on Friday, May 29, 2026, in Gulfport, Mississippi. Born on April 10, 1963 in Chugiak, Alaska, David led a life marked by his faith in Jesus Christ and dedication to his family, friends and colleagues.
David was a proud graduate of Bible Baptist Christian School (now Christian Collegiate Academy) in the class of 1981. He was voted “Class Favorite” and “Mr. BBC”. He worked tirelessly for over 40 years and built a steady and respected career and was Head Operator at the Chevron Refinery in Pascagoula, Mississippi. His commitment to his work mirrored the steadfastness he showed throughout every aspect of his life, and he made lasting friendships everywhere he went.
Beyond his professional achievements, David was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting, fishing, archery, hiking, and traveling with his beloved family and friends. These pursuits were not only hobbies but reflections of his spirit: adventurous, patient, and deeply moved with the beauty of God’s creation. David's faith in Christ was the foundation for his life. He served with honor as a deacon at Bible Baptist Church, where he was a faithful member for 60 years. His service to his congregation and community was a testament to his unwavering character and his love for God and people. While David was never shy about sharing his faith and showing Christ-like love to those around him, his urgency to do so increased after receiving his cancer diagnosis almost three years ago. Giving every moment he could to God’s will, he immediately started packing lunches for the homeless and encouraged those he met to come to know the Lord. David himself would never boast in his accomplishments nor in his acts of service, but instead carried himself with a humble, quiet integrity. Another trait that he would credit to his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
David's life was one of loyalty, love, and faithfulness; values he imparted generously to all who knew him. His legacy remains vivid in the hearts of his family and community, as they cherish the moments shared with a man who lived with integrity and a profound sense of purpose. David had a God-given talent to connect with people where they were and help them in whatever they were going through. He was a friend to those going through hard times, a father to those who needed one, and he always knew what to say to lighten the mood or mend a wound.
He is survived by his loving wife of 44 years and childhood sweetheart, Leslie R. Johnston; his children, Stephanie Skye Blair and her husband Michael, and David Johnston, Jr. and his wife Katelyn; and his treasured grandchildren, Embey, Violet and Maxwell Blair, Joelle, David III, Juliette, and Marilyn Johnston. David also leaves behind his siblings, Clifton Johnston, Jr. and Johnette, Patty Moholland and Ken, Jerry Johnston and Becky, and Theresa Morgan and Richard. His life was further enriched by numerous nieces, nephews, and other affectionate family members and friends who held him dear.
David was preceded in death by his parents, Clifton H. Johnston, Sr. and Rosa L. Johnston.
