Darwin Murray Helms, 84, of Diamondhead, Mississippi, passed away on February 27, 2026, after a courageous battle with cancer to go home to be with his Lord. Darwin was a beloved father, grandfather, brother, and friend.
Born July 30, 1941, and raised in Lamont, Iowa, Darwin later moved on to Milwaukee, Wisconsin to begin a career in aviation. He devoted his professional life to the aviation industry, owning and operating fixed base operations. Through dedication, vision, and hard work, he built a successful and respected career which spanned decades.
Darwin will be remembered for his good natured humor, warm smile, and the camaraderie he built with beloved family and treasured friends throughout the years. He loved sports and was an avid golfer. Travel, boating, fishing, and time outdoors brought him great joy, especially with those he loved the most. Above all, he loved to give tremendous care and devotion to his family. Nothing brought him more joy than time spent with his family and friends.
He was preceded in death by parents, George and Ila Helms; wife, Doreen Helms; stepson, Mike Caliva; brother, Russell Helms; sister, Marilyn Klaren; and brother-in-law, Daryl “Red” Klaren.
He is survived by a loving family, daughters, Laurie Helms Poole and Julie Marrow (Mike Mani); son, Matthew Helms (Kandi); stepchildren, Mark Caliva and stepdaughter in law, Mary Caliva; sisters, Georgia (Cyril) Koch, Dawn (Denny) Kendrick, Beverlee (Bill) Stevenson, and Jolayne “Jodi” (Jim) Nolda; brother, George “Chip” Helms; grandchildren, Ashley, Mary Christine, Allison, Riley, and Gavin; grandchildren by marriage, Sara and Chris; great grandchildren, Norah and Morgan; as well as many nieces and nephews who will cherish his memory.
Services will be held at Riemann Funeral Home, 9113 Kiln Delisle Road, Pass Christian, Mississippi. Visitation will take place on Saturday, March 14, 2026 from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM, with a service to follow at 4:00 PM.
We invite all who knew Darwin to share their memories so that together we may find comfort in the love and respect we hold for him. As we celebrate his life, let us remember the love and laughter he brought into ours.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Wounded Warrior Project, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, or a charity of your choice.
