Edward Daniel (Dan) Shipman, Jr., 84, of Ocean Springs, passed away October 29, 2007. He was born September 29, 1923 in San Antonio, TX to Edward Daniel and Ida Pfeiffer Shipman.
Dan attended the University of Texas at Austin, earning his Civil Engineering degree. He then served in World War II from 1944-1946 stationed in the Philippine Islands. After the war, he was employed with Chevron Oil Company for 38 years, first in Venice, LA then based for many years in New Orleans, LA. Upon retiring, Dan and his wife, Nita, moved to Ocean Springs, MS where he enjoyed several years with family and their beloved dogs.
DanaÌââ¢s life long hobby was archeology; he was very active in both the Louisiana and Mississippi State Archeology Societies, holding many offices and earning much recognition through the years. He was a 32nd degree Mason of the Scottish Rite Temple. Other hobbies included studying gems and minerals, coin collecting, traveling, square dancing, singing and reading.
He is survived by his wife Juanita C. Shipman; children Ann A. Milhem, Edward D. Shipman III, Margaret J. Shipman, John R. Shipman, Cheryl E. Seevers, David W. Oehler, and Leslie D. Woolard and their families; sisters Helen S. Cunningham and Eileen S. Riley; and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, grandchildren and two great-granddaughters.
He is preceded in death by his parents, daughter Catherine Jean Shipman, and first wife Barbara Dresher Shipman.
Funeral services will be at 1:00 p.m., Thursday, November 1, 2007 at the RIEMANN FAMILY FUNERAL HOME, 274 Beauvoir Road, Biloxi, where friends may visit one hour prior. Entombment will follow at Southern Memorial Park.
