Connie Jo Cumberland, age 77, of Gulfport, Mississippi, went home to be with her Lord and Savior in the early morning hours of Monday, March 30, 2026. She passed away peacefully at home while holding her husband’s hand.
Connie was preceded in death by her parents, Rhoda Josephine Langford and Carl Albert Langford, and her beloved grandson, Everett Landry Ballew.
Born on April 21, 1948, in Vicksburg, Mississippi, Connie graduated from Long Beach High School in 1966. She devoted many years to being a loving wife and stay-at-home mother to her four children. In 1988, she began her career with Gulf Coast Pediatric Clinic, where she faithfully served for over 30 years, retiring as Assistant Office Manager.
A devoted member of Bible Baptist Church since 1973, Connie gave her life to Christ on January 7 of that year and served Him wholeheartedly ever since. In 2018, she was honored with an Award of Honor and Appreciation for 45 years of dedicated service to the children of the church. She was active in many areas, including singing in the choir, participating in the ladies’ group “The Harmonettes,” and other singing ministries.
Connie’s love for children was evident in her role as Nursery Director, where she cared for countless babies over the years. She also enjoyed many hobbies, including playing church softball, vacationing with her husband and friends, sewing—famously making her own wedding dress in 1967—tending to her mother’s African violets, bird watching, and, most especially, shopping.
She is survived by her loving husband of 58 years, Hank Cumberland, who also faithfully cared for her over the past seven years. She is also survived by her children: Alicia (Greg) Moore, Jennifer (Brian) Woods, Justin (Cerelina) Cumberland, and Janie Ballew; her sister, Carolyn (David) Brooks; uncle, Earl Langford (age 96); and many cousins, nieces, and nephews.
Lovingly known as “Mawmaw,” Connie was blessed with eight grandchildren: Celeste Pilgrim, Lauren (Jacob) Hoffmann, Brian (Haley) Cumberland, Paislee Cumberland, Ty (Allison) Pilgrim, Emery Cumberland, Sloan Ballew, and Ethan Cumberland. She was also a proud and cherished great-grandmother to Rance, River, Kash, Bennett, and Ella.
A funeral service honoring Connie’s life will be held on Friday, April 3, 2026, at 2:00 p.m. at Bible Baptist Church, 12200 Dedeaux Road, Gulfport, MS. Visitation will begin at 12:00 p.m. and continue until the time of service. Interment will follow at Finley Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Bible Baptist Church Nursery Project in Connie’s honor.
Riemann Family Funeral Home, Gulfport, is serving the family.
