Lt. Col. Frank S. Cannon, USMC (Retired), age 87, a resident of Gulfport/Long Beach, passed away Tuesday, October 11, 2016 in Gulfport. He was the son of Frank and Margaret Jones Cannon of Jackson and Clinton, MS.
Frank is survived by his wife of 65 years, Margaret Spengler Cannon; his four children, Mary Margaret ""Peggy"" Cannon of Hahnville, LA, Frances Smith (Tim) of San Diego, CA, Lynn Deegen (Fred) of Long Beach, MS, and Frank S. Cannon Jr. of Metairie, LA; his three grandchildren, Jennifer Deegen Crane (Jeff), Ryan Smith and Laura Smith; and his great-grandson, Cole F. Crane.
He was born in Jackson, MS and graduated from Central High School there and from Tulane University, New Orleans, LA where he was a member of Kappa Sigma Fraternity; upon graduation in 1951 he was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant in the United States Marine Corps. His career in the Marine Corps spanned three decades including service in the Korean and Vietnam Wars. After Korea, Frank returned to duty as a General's Aide to General Wayland in San Diego, CA. After attending the Command and Staff College, he served with the Joint Chiefs of Staff in the National Military Command Center and as a Military Representative to the State Department Operations Center. He also served with the 3rd Force Service Regiment, the 1st and 2nd Marine Divisions. He was a life member of the Marine Corps League, the First Marine Division Association, the Military Officers Association of America, The Military Order of the World Wars, and the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
After his retirement from the Marine Corps he resided in Long Beach, MS for thirty five years; serving as a volunteer at the Keesler Air Force Base retiree office during much of that time. Recently he and his wife relocated to Gulfport. He and his wife shared a passion for traveling, spending their retirement years seeing the world.
A visitation for family and friends will be held from 3:00 until 5:00 p.m. on Sunday, October 16, 2016 at RIEMANN FAMILY FUNERAL HOME, 19130 Commission Road, Long Beach. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, October 17, 2016 at St. James Catholic Church, Gulfport. Interment with full honors will follow in Biloxi National Cemetery.
