Obituary

CMSgt James “Jim” Loren Sparkman, Sr., USAF Ret., age 90 of Saucier, passed away on Sunday, May 31, 2026.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Ezra and Pauline Sparkman; his beloved wife, Gladys Sparkman; his son, Joseph Sparkman; his grandson, Jerold Lee Sparkman, Jr., and his sister, Ann Risner.

Jim is survived by his sons, Jim (Laura) Sparkman, Jr. of Easton, PA, Jeff Sparkman of Texas and Jerry (Teresa) Sparkman of Saucier, MS; ten grandchildren, fifteen great grandchildren and his sister, Nancy Brownlee of Tennessee.

Born on September 13, 1935, in Linn, Mississippi, and raised in Leland, Mississippi, Jim graduated from Leland High School in 1953. Shortly after graduation, he enlisted in the United States Air Force on November 2, 1953, beginning a distinguished military career that spanned nearly 25 years. Jim proudly and honorably served his country until his retirement on March 31, 1978.

During his service, Jim specialized in communications and taught Morse code to fellow service members. His military assignments took him around the world, including tours in Vietnam, Japan, England, Italy, and ultimately Pensacola, Florida.

Following his retirement from the Air Force, Jim met and married the love of his life, Gladys. Together they shared 37 wonderful years of marriage filled with adventure and travel. The couple purchased an RV and explored much of the United States, with Texas holding a special place in their hearts. They also made many trips to Pennsylvania to visit his son, Jim, Jr.

Jim treasured time spent with his family, especially taking his sons out on the water in his ski boat. He had a lifelong passion for classic American automobiles. His first car was a 1935 T-Bucket, which he lovingly restored himself. He especially enjoyed attending Cruisin' the Coast each October, where he could share his enthusiasm for vintage cars with fellow enthusiasts.

Jim will be remembered for his dedicated service to his country, his adventurous spirit and his love of family.
