Claudia Lofton ""Mazie"" Smith, age 89, of Daisy-Vestry, passed away on Thursday, November 12th, 2015.
Born in Mangham, Louisiana, Mazie moved to the Daisy-Vestry community in 1954. She completed a three-year nursing degree at Jackson County Junior College to become a registered nurse in 1973, fulfilling a life-long dream. Mazie worked as a nurse at Ocean Springs Hospital until retiring as a charge nurse in 1990. After retirement, she worked part-time as a nurse until the late 1990s at George County Hospital in Lucedale.
After raising children for many years, Mazie pursued her interests in gardening and travel. She enjoyed learning about and seeing other cultures on several Caribbean cruises and tours of Europe.
She was preceded in death by sons George Stephen and Thomas Mitchell ""Mike"" Smith due to untimely deaths. She was preceded in death by brothers Emmett, David, Sydney, Herman, J.W., and Wallace Lofton, as well as sisters Hazel Worthey and June Booker.
Mazie is survived by children Carol Chatham, Denson Smith, and Clyde Smith. Grandchildren include Vance, Steven, Mark, Deacon, and Anna Carolyn Smith. She is also survived by great-grandchildren Seren, Madeline, Sophia, and Olivia Smith.
There will be a memorial service for ""Mazie"" at the Daisy-Vestry Community Center near Red Creek Union Baptist Church on School House Road in Daisy-Vestry. The service will begin at 12:30 PM on Sunday, November 21, 2015.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Area Agency on Aging that provided Meals on Wheels for Mazie. Checks should be made out to S.M.P.D.D. and the mailing address is SMPDD, 9229 Hwy 49, Gulfport, MS 39503.
