Charlotte Fairley

d. May 12, 2019

Charlotte Bullock Fairley, age 95, of Pass Christian passed away on Sunday, May 12, 2019.
Charlotte was born and raised in Rowland, North Carolina and graduated from Rowland High School. After graduation, she attended college and went to work at the Port of Embarkation in Charleston, South Carolina as an administrative assistant. She met her husband, Jefferson, whom she called Jeff, and they were married in 1943 in Rowland. During her husband's military career, she lived in France, Germany, the Washington DC area, Hawaii, Georgia, and Alabama. After her husband's retirement in 1968, she settled in Pass Christian where she was a resident until her passing.
She was a beloved wife, mother, sister, and friend. With a slight chuckle in her voice, she told many mostly humorous stories of her life and travels. These stories included the childhood angry bull encounter, the Swiss hotel button panel incident, and her football injury. In these stories, she usually made herself the brunt of the joke. She loved to laugh even at her own expense. She was extremely caring and connected with people easily. It was not uncommon for her to run into a complete stranger while shopping, and within about five minutes, the stranger would start pouring out all of their troubles to her. She had an uncanny ability to listen and know what to say and what not to say.
No obituary can properly sum up a life. This is especially true in Charlotte Fairley's case. If you want to know who Charlotte Fairley was, ask her family and friends. What can be said though is that this world was a better place while she was here. Right now, especially for her family with fresh grief, the world seems somewhat diminished. This will not always be the case, but it seems like a long road right now. Of course, she would have none of this talk. She would say to her family, "Live your life. Try to be a good and happy person. Remember the pain will ease over time." This is probably the same advice she would give the stranger in the store. Her family will do its best to follow her advice.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Colonel (Retired) Jefferson Melvin Fairley, U.S. Army; sisters, Clara Dell Bullock and Ruby McCormick Davis; brothers, Joseph Brown Bullock Jr.
She is survived by her son, Jefferson Melvin Fairley Jr.; cousins Jane Loy McAteer and Robert Loy Jr.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to St. Jude Children's Hospital and the American Heart Association.
A graveside service will be held on Thursday, May 16, 2019, at 1:30 pm at Biloxi National Cemetery.  RIEMANN FAMILY FUNERAL HOME, Gulfport is serving the family.
