Burial will follow in Southern Memorial Park, Biloxi. Visitation will be from 11 am until 12 noon at the funeral home prior to the service.
Mr. Smith, a native of Meridian, died Wednesday, July 30, 2014, at Memorial Hospital Gulfport. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy and led an exemplary life, as evidenced by not only his service to his country but also to anyone in need.
Charlie joined the Navy when he was 17 and was a Torpedoman's Mate Senior Chief Petty Officer (E-8) for 30 years, serving in World War II.
However, his service did not stop there. Charlie was the epitome of a Christian man, active in the First Baptist Church and donating his time and money to various causes and people. He loved people, and as a hospice volunteer, he could often be seen at the bedside of those who would otherwise have no one there beside them, bringing them whatever they loved, from magazines to ice cream. Whether it was his rigorous daily workout routine or the way he lit up with enthusiasm and wrapped his loved ones in a hug, he was an inspiration to everyone he met. He may have affectionately called the group of church ladies who doted on him ""Charlie's Angels,"" but everyone who met Charlie was touched by his own shining presence. His light in the world will be greatly missed, but this legacy of service to others will live on.
Survivors include his son, Ron Smith (Brenda) of Meridian, MS; granddaughters, Rhonda Smith Kavan (Brad) of Nashville, TN, and Amanda Gail Smith of Philadelphia, MS; great-grandson, Eli Kavan of Nashville, TN; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles Edward Smith and Hannah Elizabeth Smith; his brothers, Frank, Eugene, Jesse, and David Smith; his sisters, Alice Smith Dubose and Flora Mae Smith Miles; and his wife, Nora Smith.
In lieu of flowers, please send donations to First Baptist Church, 1560 Popps Ferry Road, Biloxi, MS 39532.
