Charles Lee Loew, age 85, of Gulfport, passed away Friday, November 22, 2024.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Jesse and Edith Loew; brother, Nelson; and sisters, Sherry Lukens and Evelyn Wall.
Charlie is survived by his wife, Carol, of 61 years; children, Charles, Jr. (Sandy), Colorado Springs, CO, James (Rachel), Biloxi, MS, Paul (Michele), Perkinston, Susan Prendergast (Brian), Saucier, MS; sister, Iris Myers, Mattoon, IL; and brother, Jerry (Patsy), Effingham, IL. He was proud to be PawPaw to his 10 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren.
Charlie enlisted in the Air Force when he was 19 and retired after 21 years. His second career was with civil service. After retiring for the second time, he began volunteering with the National Park Service, Fish and Wildlife, Back Bay Mission and the ELCA Mission Builders. Charlie was a member of Grace Lutheran Church.
In 1999, after selling their house, they purchased a motor home and began to travel and volunteer. While volunteering with Mission Builders, he assisted with building 4 churches, as well as, building a large addition for a church. At Gulf Islands National Seashore, Ocean Springs, he went to Ship Island and gave tours of Fort Massachusetts. When he was at Voyagers National Park in International Falls, MN, he was given boat training in order to take items to the islands. Charlie also assisted with multiple projects as a handyman with Back Bay Mission.
The family is having a service for Charlie at Grace Lutheran Church, 19221 Pineville Road, Long Beach, MS., starting at 10:30 am, Monday, December 9, 2024. Interment will be at Biloxi National Cemetery at 1:30 pm.
Riemann Family Funeral Home, Gulfport, is serving the Loew family.
