Carolyn Icy Purchner, loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, passed away peacefully on November 27, 2016 at the age of 85. Carolyn was born in Saucier, and was a lifelong resident of Gulfport.
Carolyn, who was affectionately called by her middle name ""Icy"" by most of her relatives and friends, worked at the Hwy 49, Gulfport Walmart store as a door greeter for over 12 years. Prior to her employment at Walmart, she delivered the Daily/Sun Herald newspaper for almost two decades.
She was a devout Roman Catholic, faithfully attending mass at St. Therese Catholic Church and St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church in Gulfport at every opportunity, until health issues kept her from attending. For many years, she enjoyed helping with the fish fry dinner fund raising events at St. Therese Catholic Church during the Lenten season.
She was a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary, VFW Post 2539 in Gulfport and in her younger years, Carolyn volunteered many hours for fund raising events at VFW Post 2539. She was a member of the DAV Auxiliary, and a member of the Military Order of the Cooties Auxiliary.
Carolyn was preceded in death by her parents, Atlas Ladner and Evelyn Dedeaux-Ladner-Peterson; her husband, Charles Purchner, Sr.;her brother, Darrell Marvin ""Bill"" Ladner; and her granddaughter, Dana Lynn Purchner.
She is survived by her dear sister, Birdie Mae Daniels; her children, Patricia A. (Tom) Silker, Charles (Carien) Purchner, Jr., Norma J. (Lamar ""Buddy"") Bond, Ronald L. ""Ronnie"" (Teresa) Purchner, and Roland (Kim) Purchner; her grandchildren, Michelle (Cliff) Purchner-Cumberland, Jeffrey Purchner, Michael (Rori) Bond, Shelby (Gage) Purchner-Cola, Tyler Purchner, Katie Purchner and Alex Purchner ; her great-grandchildren, Caroline Bond, Maddox Bond, Alexander Bond, Doijer Cumberland and Caylee Cumberland; and her nieces and nephews.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated for Carolyn at 11:00 AM on Thursday, December 1, 2016 at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church. Recitation of The Holy Rosary will start at 9 AM and the family will receive friends from 9:30 - 11 AM. Interment will follow in Evergreen Cemetery, Gulfport.
