Carlie D. Scofield, age 79 of Gulfport, went to be with the Lord on Saturday, May 30, 2009, at Memorial Hospital in Gulfport.
Carlie graduated from Lyman High School in 1950, and joined the Navy, serving four years on the USS Graffias off the Korean Coast. Upon returning home, he attended Perkinston Jr. College and received his B.S. with a Suma Cum Laude from MS State and his Masters from Southern MS.
He was director of Vocational Technical Training for 25 years at the Jeff Davis Campus of MGCCC. He was owner of Scofield and Son Refrigeration for 54 years.
He also owned and operated Danny's Fried Chicken in Long Beach for 15 years, where he was named Gardener of the Month many times for his flower beds, grew cotton for the school children to see, started the first Long Beach Easter Egg Hunt, and was named Citizen of the Year in 1993. He, his family, friends, and workers could be found on Thanksgiving Days for many years cooking, serving, and delivering more than 700 dinners to the sick and shut- ins.
After his 3rd retirement, he spent his time enjoying his family, friends, and gardening and fishing with his grandsons.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Clarence and Myrtle Scofield; his brother, De Elmer, and sister, Yvonne.
He is survived by his loving wife of 52 years, Martha Thompson Scofield; a son, Scott Scofield; a daughter, Stacey Scofield and her husband Craig Fredericks, and two grandsons, Justin and Matt Fredericks, all of Gulfport.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held on Tuesday, June 2, 2009, at 1:00 p.m. at the First Assembly of God Church on 22nd Ave in Gulfport, with visitation one hour prior to the service. Burial will follow at Evergreen Cemetery.
The family would like to thank Dr. Douglas Lanier, Dr. O'Garman, Dr. Dautrive, Dr. Graham; his nurses on the 5th floor and his nurses in ICU, for the very special care and treatments that he received at Memorial Hospital; also Lee, the nurses and staff, and his friends at the Dialysis Clinic on West Railroad Street, and also for all the prayers and support from family and friends.
