Captain Phillip John Kies, U.S. Coast Guard, Ret, age 88, of Long Beach, passed away on June 9, 2026.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Shirley Kies; a son, Darrell Kies; his parents, William Kies and Christina Kies; and a sister, Christian Kall.
He is survived by a son, Darren Kies (Tracy); a sister, Judy Kies; 3 grandchildren, Brady Kies (Kate), Will Kies, and Kendall Kies; a great-grandchild, Clayton Kies; nieces, Kathy DeMaria and Kelly Savlov; a nephew, Gregg Kall; and other relatives and friends.
Mr. Kies was a native of Syracuse, NY and was a longtime resident of Long Beach. He retired after 30 plus years from the United States Coast Guard achieving the rank of Captain. Following his retirement from the Coast Guard, he was employed with SAIC and Bay Technical Associates. Capt. Kies served as president of the Long Beach Harbor Commission for 30 years and he also helped establish the Long Beach Fetch Dog Park. He enjoyed watching the New York Yankees, reading, border collies, and BMWs. He was a member of the Coast Guard Combat Veteran’s Association and other civic and professional associations.

Visitation will be on Friday, June 12, 2026, from 1 - 3 pm at the Riemann Family Funeral Home, 19130 Commission Rd, Long Beach. The funeral service will be at 3 pm in the funeral home chapel. Interment will be in Gulf Pines Memorial Gardens.
