Cannie Lee Cody, Jr.

January 20, 1930 — May 21, 2025

Cannie Lee Cody, Jr., known to family and friends as "Lee," "Buddy," or simply "Cody," was a proud Jacksonville native, former law enforcement officer, author, and lifelong crusader for justice.

Lee is survived by his daughter Kimberly Cody Waterhouse; sons Scott Glenn Cody and Shannon O'Brien Cody; and sister Patricia I. Carter. Pre-Deceased by his father Cannie Lee Cody, Sr, mother Helen Patricia Dukes.

He served honorably in the United States Coast Guard. He went on to graduate as a valedictorian from the Duval County Patrol Academy. His law enforcement career with the Duval County Sheriff's Office was one of purpose and passion, where he rose to the rank of Detective Sergeant.

A published author of The 14th Denial - A Civil Rights Memoir: a powerful, unflinching account of systemic injustice, and murder of Johnnie Mae Chapelle. He was enshrined into the Congressional Library of Congress. Special thanks to The Coleman Family (Donald & Ray), The West Family (Claude), Ricky Pittman, Susan Clark Armstrong, The Chappell Family, and Keith Beauchamp.

He was an avid sports fan who loved University of Florida Gator football and enjoyed all types of car racing and football. Music was another great love; especially singing. He also loved shag dancing.

In his later years, Lee enjoyed a quite and fulfilling life along the Gulf Coast of Mississippi. The family would like to give special thanks to Stephanie Paige-McClure, the Scully Family, Amanda Steele, his Arbor Station Family, and his care givers for the love, care, and friendship they gave their father.

A memorial service with honors will be held at Jacksonville National Cemetery, June 27, 2:30 P.M. Please forward condolences and remembrances to his daughter, Kimberly Cody Waterhouse, P.O Box 3573, Jacksonville, FL 32206.
