Byron L. ""Butch"" Brumfield, Jr.
Byron L. ""Butch"" Brumfield, Jr. passed away Friday, April 19, 2013 after an extended battle with cancer. Butch was born in Laurel, MS, on June 18, 1966. He graduated from Gulfport High School in 1984. After graduation, he attended Mississippi State University.
While at MSU, he was critically injured in a car wreck leaving him a paraplegic. After spending 6 months at the Shepherd Spinal Rehabilitation Center in Atlanta, Ga., he returned to MSU and received his undergraduate degree and a Masters in Vocational Rehabilitation. While working on his Masters, he wrote grants for the Vocational Rehabilitation Department.
Upon graduation, he entered the medical consulting field and lived independently until his health failed. He was welcomed by his parents when he returned home and stayed with them until his death.
Butch was an avid NASCAR fan. Dale Earnhardt was his favorite driver, and he attended the Talladega race many times. He was also a computer savvy technical person, earning his Microsoft Certified Engineering degree.
He is preceded in death by maternal grandfather, Ralph Fleming; paternal grandparents, William B. Brumfield Sr. and Ruth Davis Brumfield; aunts, Susan Brumfield and Lynne Fleming Smith.
He is survived by his parents, Byron L. Brumfield, Sr. and Janet Fleming Brumfield of Laurel; brothers, Chris Brumfield and wife, Melissa Cooper Brumfield, and their children, Tanner, Cooper, and Caroline; and Benjamin and his daughter Anna; uncle, W. B. ""Bill"" Brumfield; maternal grandmother, Delorce Fleming.
A Memorial Service will be held at Houston Road Baptist Church, Laurel, MS, on April 28, 2013, at 2pm, where Butch was a member.
A special thanks goes out to Drs. Phillip Ley, Carolyn Cegielski, and Ross Ward; 5th floor nurses at Baptist Hospital and Hospice caregivers, Bonny Brown and Kevin Long.
