BG (RET) Robert G "Toobee" Johnson, age 75, of Saucier, passed away on Saturday, January 14, 2017, at home with his loving family at his side.
A native of Smith County, Toobee was born to Opal and Barney Johnson. He graduated from Central High School, Jackson, MS, and concluded his civil education at Mississippi State University, Starkville, MS, and William Carey College, Gulfport, MS.
BG Johnson's military career spanned over 34 years. He started his military career in June of 1960 with the 213th MED BN in Jackson, MS, where he achieved the rank of Sergeant First Class (SFC) before attending Officer Candidate School (OCS) at Ft Benning, GA in 1966. After graduating OCS, he attended Army Rotor Wing Flight Training at Ft Wolters, TX and Ft Rucker, AL, where he graduated in April of 1970. After numerous assignments and duties in Jackson, MS, BG Johnson was transferred in 1971 to the Transportation Aircraft Repair Shop (TARS) at Gulfport, MS, where he was assigned as the Production Control Officer. In 1979 TARS was reformed to the 1108th Aviation Classification Repair Activity Depot (AVCRAD) where he was assigned as the Deputy Commander. In 1986 he was promoted to Colonel and assigned as the AVCRAD Commander. In 1994 he was promoted to Brigadier General (BG) by Governor Kirk Fordice.
He was a member of the National Guard Association of Mississippi, the Army Aviation Association of America, and Poplarhead United Methodist Church, Saucier, MS.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Linda Johnson; his children, LTC Mark Johnson (April), and Michael Johnson (Tina); siblings, Glenda McKay (Martin), and Russell Johnson (Kristen); grandchildren, Sarah Johnson, Alexander Gray, Austin Johnson, Lauren Johnson; and his uncle, Travis Johnson (Rita).
A visitation will be held on Tuesday, January 17, 2017, at RIEMANN FAMILY FUNERAL HOME, 11280 Three Rivers Road, Gulfport, where friends may visit from 5:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, January 18, 2017, at Poplarhead United Methodist Church in Saucier. Friends are invited to visit one hour prior.
Burial will follow in Poplarhead Cemetery. Memories may be shared at www.riemannfamily.com
In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the charity of your choice.
