Betty Joan Stevens

June 19, 1947 — September 17, 2015

Ms. Betty Joan Stevens was born in Laurel, MS on June 19, 1947 in Jones County to the late Lester Lee Thomas and Aline Musgrove. She attended Sandy Gavin Elementary and Oak Park High School where most of her friends referred to her as ""Big Red.""
Betty accepted Christ as her personal savior during the early years of her life. When she moved to Gulfport, MS she visited First Missionary Baptist Church and wanted to join after just one visit. She joined FMBC but was unable to attend due to her health issues but was still a happy member.
Betty joined the Detroit Police Department in 1977 and was on the force for 33 years until she decided to retire. She retired as a Sergeant and loved her job. She was a coach for the Police Athletic League for years and she loved children. She loved them so much that she was a foster parent to many. Some of them still called her mom until her passing. She moved to Gulfport in 2010 where she worked for the Gulfport Police Department as a Community Service Office for four years before retiring again. She was definitely a ""people person"" and was loved by many.
She departed this life and moved to her heavenly home, Thursday, September 17, 2015.
She was preceded in death by her mother, Ms. Aline Musgrove and her father, Mr. Lester Lee Thomas.
She leaves to cherish her memories: one son, Mr. Leo Stevens of Jackson, MS, one daughter, Ms. Lisa Stevens of Gulfport, MS and a special daughter, Ms. Dawn Lawrence of Gulfport, MS. She also leaves memories with her grandchildren: Sharde Stevens of Detroit, MI, Leo Stevens of Detroit, MI, Asia Bradley of Detroit, MI, Adrian Lawrence of Gulfport, MS, Destiny Stevens of Gulfport, MS and Sharmaine Stevens of Jackson MS; her two sisters, Lora Ann Thomas and Leslie Thomas; her one brother, Charles Arrington; her three great grandchildren and a host of relatives and friends.
