Betty Maxine Sowers, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and dedicated educator, passed away peacefully on Monday, June 8, 2026, in Zachary, Louisiana. Born Betty Maxine Taylor on August 4, 1943, in Burlingame, Kansas, she lived a life marked by unwavering commitment to her family, faith, and community.

A lifelong learner, Betty earned her Associates Degree in Education, which paved the way for her impactful career at Anniston Avenue Elementary School. Her passion for nurturing young minds was evident to all who knew her, and her dedication left an indelible mark on the countless students whose lives she touched.

Betty’s devotion extended beyond her professional sphere into her cherished role as an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints for over 55 years, a cornerstone of her identity and source of profound strength.

Those who loved Betty will fondly remember her vibrant spirit demonstrated through her hobbies and interests, including camping, cooking, water aerobics, and engaging in board and card games with family. These activities brought joy to her life and created cherished memories with those she held dear.

Betty’s enduring legacy is reflected in her close-knit family. She is survived by her devoted husband of 64 years, William D. Sowers; her children Kathy Peters (Jeff), Kelly Logins (Mike), Michael Sowers (Leslie), David Sowers (Christy), and Nathan Sowers (Christa). She took immense pride and joy in her grandchildren Katie Hall, Sydney Crouch, Brittany Kuhl, Lauren Brant, Kristen Peled, Tori Ibarra, Logan Dodd, Rhuvana Bertoch, Blake Sowers, Michael Peled, Sarah Peters, Austin Sowers, and Hannah Doshi, as well as her great-grandchildren Abigail Hall, Connor and Liam Crouch, Eliza and Everett Kuhl, Bennett and Aiden Brandt, Mila and Eila Ibarra, Beckett and Reagan Dodd, Milo and Archie Bertoch, and Wren and Ezra Sowers. Betty’s family circle is further enriched by her siblings Karen Bert, Verna Hutton, and Lorne Taylor.

Her life was preceded by her loving parents, Vernon Taylor and Maxine Taylor, whose memory she carried with her until the end.

A visitation will be held on Friday, June 12, 2026, from 10:30 a.m. until 11:00 a.m., followed by a funeral service from 11:00 a.m. at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, located at 11148 Klein Road, Gulfport, MS 39503. These services offer an opportunity for family, friends, and community members to honor Betty Maxine Sowers’ remarkable life and bid her a respectful farewell. Following the service, there will be a private Dedication of the Grave at Floral Hills Memorial Gardens in Gulfport.

Betty’s grace, kindness, and unwavering faith have left an enduring impression on all who had the honor to know her. Her legacy will continue to inspire generations to come.
