Bettie Augustine Cox DeMetz

Bettie Augustine Cox DeMetz, was born September 10, 1933, to August and Lillian Cox of Pass Christian, Mississippi. She was the youngest of six siblings, Esther, Vivian, Hazel, Elliott, and Bernie, who all adored their baby sister. Bettie graduated from St. Joseph's Academy, where she loved to play basketball. While working for the telephone company, she began courting the love of her life, Fred "Dedo" DeMetz. Married on June 1, 1952, they built a beautiful family that included their five children. Bettie devoted her life to being the best homemaker, caring not just for her husband and children, but anyone who came into her path.

Bettie loved the Lord and constantly prayed, especially for her family. She embodied the gifts of the Holy Spirit. Love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, and gentleness are all words that describe the type of person, wife, mother, and grandmother that she was. She always put her family's needs before her own. She leaves behind a legacy of love because family was most important to her.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Fred, with whom she shared 47 years of marriage; her devoted and adoring children, Fred DeMetz (Susan), Dianne Winfield (Scott), Charlotte Ladner (Wade), Susan Lamberg (the late Greg Lamberg), and Laura Castiglia (Alvin). She was also the proud grandmother to 12 grandchildren: Jackie Plaisance (Shane), Tara White (Jason), Hannah Oliver (Charles), Aimee Mclendon (Jonathan), John Erwin (Nancy), Jamie Graham (Christian), Luke Hanna, Greg Lamberg, Brittany Klause (Zach). David DeMetz, Rodney Ladner (Andrea), and Tara Smith (Josh); and her great-grandchildren, John Charles, Brantley and Ann Colleen Erwin, Grace and Adam Oliver, Carter and Lillian Mclendon, Gabrielle White, Braxton and Shire Lamberg, August Graham, and Zoey and Teagan Smith.

Bettie passed away peacefully on Wednesday, May 28, 2025, surrounded by her family. Graveside services will begin at 10:30 AM on Friday, June 6, 2025, at Long Beach City Cemetery, Long Beach, Mississippi. The family would like to thank Notre Dame Hospice for the impeccable care given to Bettie in her final days.
