Ashlee has been a diabetic since 1983 and became disabled when his leg was amputated in 2011. He learned to walk all over again with lessons and practice from recreation therapist and friend, Frank Lestrade and specially built prosthetics, including a 'water leg', thanks to friend Kurt Patton and his associates. He chose to help others learn to live with their disability.
Ashlee learned first-hand the trials, tribulation, and pain associated being a new amputee. While still working with Frank, they co-founded the first Amputee Support Group in Mississippi.
In the spring of 2014, he was diagnosed with kidney disease and started dialysis treatments.
