Ann Hough Hopkins of Gulfport, passed away April 12, following a lengthy illness.
Born to Frank Hough and Ann Graham Hough on Dec. 31, 1935, Ann was a native of Shaw, MS. She was an avid basketball and tennis player who won two State Amateur Tennis titles and won the Ladies State Basketball title while attending Shaw High School. She earned her BA from Agnes Scott College and also attended Smith College for a summer semester. In the late 1940's, Ann left her beloved Delta to begin her teaching career in Gulfport where she would meet and marry Dr. Arvah Mansell Hopkins. Coaching tennis and ladies' basketball was her life's passion and in her thirty-plus years with the Gulfport School District, she produced many champions. She was an outspoken advocate for physical education as an integral part of the elementary school curriculum.
Ann was a faithful member of the First United Methodist Church of Gulfport. She was also active in numerous civic and social clubs, holding various offices in the Gulfport Yacht Club Ladies' Auxiliary. She was a charter member of Gulfport's premier garden club, the Four Seasons and a former member of the Gulfport Junior Auxiliary. Ann loved Mardi Gras, and was a member of Merry Maskers and Revelers Carnival Associations. Her appreciation for life-long learning made her an enthusiastic member of the Culture Club.
She was predeceased by her parents, her husband, Dr. Arvah Hopkins and son, Arvah Mansell Hopkins, Jr., sisters Lady Boo Reeves of Nashville and Margaret Farr of Washington, DC.
Ann is survived by her son, Dr. John Hopkins, of Gulfport and two grandsons, Graham and Worth Hopkins of Raleigh-Durham,NC, nephews Frank and Joe Reeves of Nashville, TN, and niece Ann Farr of Washington, DC.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, April 17, 2014 at 12: 00 PM with visitation one hour preceding at First United Methodist Church, downtown Gulfport. Interment will be in Evergreen Cemetery.
The family asks that in lieu of flowers, donations be made in her name to the First United Methodist Church of Gulfport, 2301 15th Street, Gulfport, MS 39501.
