Alvin Boyd, age 96, passed away on May 20, 2013, in Gulfport, MS. Alvin was born on February 5, 1917, in Sumrall, MS, and lived in Gulfport for over 50 years.
Alvin served in the United States Army during WWII and was stationed at Pearl Harbor and Guadalcanal. He also served in New Guinea and the Northern Solomon Islands. He was awarded the American Defensive Service Medal with Bronze Star before his honorable discharge as a Sergeant. He worked for the Civil Service Keesler Air Force Base and also the Harrison County School System. He was a member and inactive deacon of New Hope Baptist Church and lifetime member of the Disabled American Veterans. Alvin enjoyed fishing and hunting with his sons and brothers and loved to work in his garden.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Alpha and Henry Boyd; his son, Dennis Boyd; his son-in-law, Don Jones; his siblings, Howard Boyd, Leroy Boyd, Troy Bond, Nanny Lott, Letha Glass, Merle Fairchild, and Myrtis Martin.
He is survived by his loving wife of sixty-nine years, Mildred Boyd; his children, Joyce Boyd Jones, Ted Russell Boyd (Judy), and Marilyn Boyd Thornton (Lance); grandchildren, Brian Jones, Jason Boyd (Holly), Julie Boyd, Jeremy Dryman, Dan Dryman, and Blake Newell; great-grandchildren, Zachary Davis, Courtney Boyd, and Christopher Boyd; his brothers, Jabous Boyd (Ida) and Norman Boyd (Connie); and numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, May 23, 2013, at RIEMANN FAMILY FUNERAL HOME, 11280 Three Rivers Road, Gulfport, at 2:00 p.m. Friends may visit one hour prior to services.
Burial will follow at Floral Hills Memorial Gardens.
