Obituary

Alton Ray Farley, born in 1936 in Hico, Louisiana, lived a life defined by service, faith, craftsmanship, and love for family. He passed away leaving behind a legacy of devotion that touched countless lives.

He was the beloved son of Alton W. Farley and Eula Lee Farley, and grew up alongside his brothers, Donald Farley and Colbert Farley, and his sister, Carolyn Palmer. From humble beginnings, he grew into a man of integrity, strength, and unwavering dedication to both country and community.

Alton proudly served his nation for 20 years in the United States Air Force, retiring with honor as a Tech Sergeant (TSGT E-6). His calling to serve did not end there. He continued his military service with the Mississippi Army National Guard, where he later retired as a Chaplain with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. Through his role as chaplain, he offered guidance, comfort, and faith to those in uniform and beyond, reflecting the deep spiritual conviction that shaped his life.

After his military career, Alton devoted himself to education and craftsmanship. He taught shop at Ocean Springs High School and later taught machine shop at Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College, sharing his knowledge and passion for working with his hands. He also owned and operated A&W Machine Works, where his skill and dedication to quality were well known. In addition, he served faithfully as a United Methodist pastor, ministering with compassion and wisdom to his congregation and community.

Alton found joy in the simple and meaningful things in life. He loved wood carving, building birdhouses, playing musical instruments—especially the guitar—collecting and cracking pecans with his grandchildren, making jerky, and spending time working in his shop. Whether creating with his hands or making music, he poured love and care into all he did.

Above all, Alton cherished his family. He is survived by his loving wife, Dean Farley; his son, David Farley; his daughter, Karen Lowrey; his daughter-in-law, Tina Farley; and his son-in-law, Zane Lowrey. He was a proud grandfather to David and Amber Farley, Coby and Hannah Ratliff, Trevor Lowrey, and Ashley and Nathan Cole, and a joyful great-grandfather to Baylor and Margo Ratliff, Noah and Holly Farley, William Cole and Payton Robinson. He was not only a grandfather to his own grandchildren, but to so many others who loved him, learned from him, and were blessed by his guidance, kindness, and steady presence. His wisdom, patience, and gentle spirit made him grandpa and mentor to many whose lives he quietly shaped. His family was the center of his world, and his legacy will live on through each of them.

A service celebrating Alton’s life will be held on February 19th at 12:00 p.m. at Riemann Family Funeral Homes, located at 13872 Lemoyne Blvd, Biloxi, Mississippi, 39532. A procession to Biloxi National Cemetery with full military honors being rendered at the 1:30 p.m. burial will immediately follow.

Alton Ray Farley will be remembered for his faithful service, gentle spirit, skilled hands, and steadfast love. His life was a testament to duty, faith, and family, and he will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
