Master Chief Alexander Douglas Christie Sr., U.S. Navy, retired, 69, born on October 11, 1944, passed away on November 10, 2013, at his home in Gulfport, MS.
A native of Yarmouth, Nova Scotia, Canada; he lived with his mother, Phyllis; and his four sisters, Imogene, Cynthia, Wanda and Robin. Alex moved to the United States in 1964, where he joined the U.S. Navy and proudly served for 20 years. As a member of the Seabees, he demonstrated his ""Can Do"" attitude at duty stations and communities all around the world. He retired at the rank of Command Master Chief in 1984. After his service, Alex continued his education and graduated with a bachelor's degree in engineering and applied his knowledge as a civil engineer with Pan Am and Johnson Controls at Stennis Space Center, MS. He completed his career at the City of Gulfport, Public Works Department.
Alex surrendered his life to his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, in 1971. He lived out his faith by loving others as Christ loved. He shared his faith with the desire that no one would pass from this world without a relationship with his Savior. He demonstrated his faith through extreme adversity and proved that God can accomplish great works through a common sinner.
He was preceded in death by his father, Alexander Christie; mother, Phyllis Amirault; and sisters, Imogene Flint and Cynthia Amirault.
Alex is survived by his loving wife of 47 years, Joyce Faye Christie; sisters, Wanda Haley, Robin Amirault, Annabel Pfeiffer and Johanna Christie-Smith; son, Alexander Douglas Christie, Jr. and wife Sharon, of Buffalo Gap, SD; daughter, Lois Christie Varnado and husband Mickey of Gulfport, MS; grandchildren: Lyndsey Payne (James), Sydney Christie (Ary), Alex Varnado, Alec Christie, Ian Christie, Riley Christie and Madison Varnado; and his great grandchildren: Kade Marsee and Gabriel Payne.
A visitation will be held at Michael Memorial Baptist Church, 15053 John Clark Road, Gulfport, on Thursday, November 14, 2013, at 5:30PM followed by the funeral service at 7:00PM. The family will attend a burial service with military honors on Friday, November 15, 2013, at the Biloxi National Cemetery.
In Lieu of flowers, the family has asked that donations be made to the Michael Memorial Baptist Church Mission Fund, 15053 John Clark Rd, Gulfport, MS 39503, in his honor.
