Ada Reid

Ada I. Reid, age 88 of Long Beach, died on Monday, May 24, 2021 in Gulfport.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Fred and Zou Ellen Thornhill; her infant son, Christopher Mitchell; her daughters, Joy Mitchell Shepherd and Sue Mitchell Hatcher; her sister, Bettye Holliday; and her brothers, Fred Thornhill, Felix Thornhill, and Paul Thornhill.

She is survived by her children, Amy Barrett (Tommy) and Harry “Bud” Mitchell (Heather); her sons-in-law, John Hatcher and Jim Shepherd; her sister, Floy Lily; her 13 grandchildren; and her 12 great grandchildren.

A native of Fords Creek, MS, Ada served as editor for the Andrews Journal, Andrews, NC; Public Relations Director for Gulfport Memorial Hospital where she hosted numerous health programs for physicians; and was a columnist for the Sun Herald SLANT on Seniors. While at Memorial Hospital, she developed the Good as Gold program, Prom for Seniors, and Brighter Days for Golden Years. In addition, she was instrumental in helping to pass a local bond issue.

Ada especially enjoyed reading, garage sales, square dancing and mission trips. She was a Sunday school teacher and also a board member with Gulf Coast Mental Health.

The family would love for everyone to know that wherever their mother was meant it was a brighter and happier place. She was always there to encourage family and friends alike. She made her children feel like they could do anything, so they did!

A graveside service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Thursday, May 27, 2021 at Gulf Pines Memorial Gardens in Long Beach.
