Ada Catherine Wilmot Brandon, 103, passed away peacefully at home on September 1, 2015 in Jackson, Mississippi.
A private graveside service will be conducted by Dr. Guy Richard, pastor of First Presbyterian Church of Gulfport at Evergreen Cemetery, Friday, September 4. The family will receive friends in the parlor of Covenant Presbyterian Church, Jackson, on Saturday, September 5, at 12:30, prior to the 2pm memorial service in the sanctuary conducted by her grandson-in-law, Rev. Britton Wood.
Ada was born on July 16, 1912 in New Orleans, the only child of Frederick Wilmot and Margaret Anna Murphy. She grew up in Gulfport, MS and graduated from Gulfport High School in 1930. Ada represented the state of Mississippi in the national novice typing contest in Toronto in 1929 and shared her God-given talent in piano all her life, even after macular degeneration diminished her sight.
In 1937 she married Charles Harrison (""Choppy"") Brandon, owner of Brandon Insurance Agency in Gulfport. They spent 48 wonderful years together and were longtime members of First Presbyterian Church where she served as president of the women of the church and received a lifetime membership pin.
Following her husband's death in 1985, Ada moved to Jackson to be near family and joined Covenant Presbyterian Church. As a part of the ""Greatest Generation"" she had the qualities of courage, determination, and resourcefulness, having lived during the Great Depression. She was a lovely southern lady who loved the Lord and her family and friends. Her beautiful smile came from her kind heart and she was an inspiration to all who knew her.
She is survived by her daughter, Kathy Hays, and her husband, Bill, of Jackson, 3 grandchildren and their spouses: David and Elizabeth Hays of Hillsborough, NC; Kathryn and Reid Cotten of Jackson; and Elizabeth and Britton Wood of Menlo Park, CA. As an only child who had an only child, she was amazed that the Lord blessed her with 9 great-grandchildren, who affectionately called her ""Great""- Mac and Ada Catherine Hays; Caroline, William, and Wilson Cotten; and Mary Walton, Shelby, Britton, and Katherine Wood.
In lieu of flowers, the family would welcome donations to the
Ada W. Brandon Scholarship
or a favorite charity.
