The weather managed to hold off until after the ceremony, which made things much easier. A special thank you to Father Ryan McCoy with St. Alphonsus for our prayer... the Mississippi Coast Chamber and Jackson County Chamber for helping with the actual ribbon cutting... the Ocean Springs Junior R.O.T.C. for helping us by raising our flag for the first time... Kimberly Scherlofsky for singing a beautiful rendition of our National Anthem... and Hunter Lipscomb with a Proclamation read aloud from Congressman Steven Palazzo's office.

We had wonderful feedback about our new state-of-the-art facility and we were so happy to give tours to everyone that stopped by. Here a some pictures from the day!

Flag Day 2014 was a great success! Same as year's past, we asked the community to donate their old, tattered flags to one of our drop off locations. Once donated, the flag would be draped over the cremation casket of a Veteran that chose cremation. This is one of the most patriotic and dignified ways to dispose of a flag.

This year for Flag Day, June 14th, 2013, Riemann Family Funeral Homes partnered with 7 local businesses and 4 city halls across the Mississippi Gulf Coast to be 'donation points' with boxes placed in their businesses for members of the community to donate their worn and tattered flags. We placed ads in the newspaper and on tv to let people know about our flag retirement program and where they could donate the flags. Once someone donates their flag, we will drape it over the casket of a veteran that has chosen cremation as a means of disposition. We have had a phenomenal response from our community and tons of flags have been donated! We hope that people will continue to donate their flags and we can pay tribute to our veterans, even in the smallest of ways!

This month's Caregiver of the Month is Vivian Champaigne. For those that may not know Vivian, her nomination letter says it all. It reads:

Vivian is a caregiver to the caregivers in our community! She is one of the most compassionate people you will ever meet on a one-on-one basis with seniors and vulnerable populations. As a leader in the Jackson County Senior Awareness group, she helps us stay organized and focused in sponsoring special events throughout the year. She is our "go to" person for spreading the word when we have needs in the senior community. She works tirelessly on whatever project is next on the list. Vivian doesn't know what it means to work at "a job." For her, it's a "calling" and she does so with purpose, a willing heart, and a compassionate spirit. Her enthusiasm and energy inspire us all to be better, to do better, to do more to reach the needs of our seniors in Jackson County. She volunteers in her church and community and works tirelessly to "give back." I can't think of a more deserving person to recognize than Vivian.

Thank you for everything you have done, Vivian!

He not only was there to answer questions about medications for a family but also for spiritual healing, a friend to talk to, and overall 'like a brother'. Having the pleasure of meeting Mr. Graham, we found that he truly cares about what he does and the families that he serves each and every day. Sean is a perfect example of how 'going the extra mile' can really make a difference to those you touch. Thank you again, Sean, for what you have done and what you continue to do every day!

Last week, we were able to honor Ms. Summer Baker, with Hospice Compassus, as our December 2012 Caregiver of the Month. Christmas trees are decorated and the winner is determined by the most money raised for that tree. The Pink Heart Fund is a non-profit organization founded by JoAn Niceley of Long Beach, MS. They provide wigs for children who have cancer. They also provide breast prosthetics for women who have had breast cancer. Melanie Lynch, one of our own staff here at Riemann Family Funeral Homes, decorated a tree on behalf of the Pink Heart Fund this year. They received approximately $1,300 in dontation between Saturday & Sunday, which was the most by any non-profit there. As a result, they also received an additional $1,000 from Ron Meyers for the Pink Heart Fund. At the end of the festival, the tree was sold for an addition $300, bringing the grand total to $2,600 raised for the 2 days for the Pink Heart Fund. Congratulations, Melanie & the Pink Heart Fund, on your success at the event! We hope that success is continued throughout the year and that you continue to touch lives among the Mississippi Gulf Coast! Enjoy our pictures of the event!

Our program included the singing of the National Anthem by Jennifer Pav Walker, a prayer from Rev. John McCay, the presentation of the colors from the Gulfport High School J.R.O.T.C., keynote speaker General Joe Spraggins, and a 9-shot salute and taps from the Keesler Air Force Base Honor Guard. It was a special day and a wonderful chance to show our appreciation. Take a look at some of the pictures from the day and we hope you will all join us next year!

We gave them out following masses across the coast. As you can see from the pictures, the mums were beautiful and people were excited to have them. We had so much fun and can't wait until next year! Enjoy!
