Margie Eloise Drummond Newman, 93, passed away on Monday, July 21, 2014, at her home in Gulfport, MS, after a long and courageous battle with lung cancer.
She was born in Picayune, MS. She graduated from King's Daughter's Nursing School in Gulfport in the early 1940's, and subsequently worked as an RN at Charity Hospital and Hotel Dieu Hospital in New Orleans. She married Edward Owen Newman of Elmira, New York, in New Orleans in 1945, where they lived for many years until they moved to Gulfport in 1964. She later worked as a nurse (""Nurse Newman/The Vegetable Lady"") for the Follow Through Program of the Gulfport School District from 1969 until 1985. She was a member of St. James Catholic Church in Gulfport, where she was a Eucharistic Minister and a member of the Bereavement Committee, among other things. She was involved with the Gulfport Elks Club, and reigned as Queen Fidelity XV in 1977.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Edward Owen Newman; and her parents, Clyde and Agnes (Lott) Drummond of Gulfport.
She is survived by her five beloved children, Beth Newman Joffrion (Terry), Jan Newman Langford, Bert Newman, Carol Newman Braccini (Paul), and Mary Sherrill Newman Illing; seven grandchildren, Blair Simpson, Sean Illing, Dominique Langford Jablonski, Eddie Langford, Willow Braccini, Paulo Braccini, and Jade Braccini; several great-grandchildren; and her brother, Buford (Joe) Drummond of New Orleans.
The family wants to thank Notre Dame Hospice for their care, compassion and support; also Dianne Williams and her daughter Jackie, who helped care for ""Merry Marge"" with love and kindness.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the St. Vincent de Paul Society through St. James Church, 366 Cowan Road, Gulfport, MS 39507 or the Humane Society of South Mississippi, 2615 - 25th Avenue, Gulfport, MS 39501.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. James Catholic Church, Gulfport, on Wednesday, July 23, 2014 at 11:00 AM with a visitation for family and friends from 10:00 AM until the Mass. visitation will be one hour before mass. Burial will immediately follow at Bayou Coco Cemetery, Kiln, MS.
