Loraine Daws Simpson was born January 23, 1921 in her childhood home in DeKalb, Mississippi.
She was the daughter of the late Joseph Henry Daws and Johnnie Cecil Clark Daws. She is a graduate of DeKalb High School and received her BA in Business from Mississippi State University for Women. She worked for the Corp of Engineers after college graduation, and then pursued a career in teaching with the Gulfport City Schools for thirty years until her retirement. She and her late husband, Jimmy, were charter members of Westminster Presbyterian Church in Bayou View where she was a former elder. Her church family remained a very integral and important part of her life. She loved the Lord, and she loved the people at Westminster. Their love for her showed in their kindness and attention to her during her struggles with Parkinson's disease. She was proud to be honored as a life-time member of the Women of Westminster Presbyterian Church.
She was preceded in death by her husband, James Robert Simpson, Sr, and her daughter, Dr. Linda Simpson Barkett.
She is survived by her son, Jim Simpson, Jr. and his wife Sandi of Madison; son-in-law, Mike Barkett of Brandon. She adored her four granddaughters, Jennifer Simpson Griffin (Brantley) and their children, Colson and Kase of Birmingham, Amanda Simpson Granberry (Michael) and their daughter, Tenley of Flowood, Ashley Simpson of Hammond, LA and Katherine Barkett Byrd (Adam) of Brandon.
Loraine was blessed to have excellent and loving caregivers that enabled her to live at home during her long battle with Parkinson's disease. Our heartfelt thanks goes out to these special ladies: Ann Clements, Pansy Grant, Leila Moore, Barbara Hair, Carolyn, and Melissa Moore. She will indeed be remembered as a true Southern lady of hospitality and charm. Her inner strength and determined independence have been an inspiration to many.
