Jerry Alvin Estep, 63, passed away unexpectedly on Monday, June 20, 2016 in Dania Beach, FL. He was born to Lawrence and Gretchen Estep in Roswell, NM. At the age of five months, he moved with his family to Gulfport while his dad served in Korea. After living in Texas and Alabama, he moved back to Gulfport, MS. Jerry accepted Christ as his savior as a teenager at Grace Memorial Baptist Church where he was active in church programs until he moved to Florida. Jerry graduated from Gulfport High School and the University of Southern Mississippi. He worked for the Boy Scouts of America, director of parks and recreation for the city of Gulfport and Hollywood, FL. At the time of his death, he had been director of parks and recreation for Miami Shores Village, FL for 18 years. His job included working with children and youth. They loved him dearly. Jerry was kind and thoughtful, which extended to his death as he was an organ donor.
A memorial service was held in Dania Beach, FL. His ashes will be spread over the Florida Keys where he, Barbara, and Terry enjoyed fishing trips, lobstering, diving, and watching beautiful sunsets. Jerry was also an avid Saints fan and was fortunate enough to be at the Miami Stadium when the Saints won the super bowl. He will be missed by many and especially his two main coon cats, Abbie and Allie.
He was preceded in death by his father.
He is survived by his wife Barbara, his mother, Gretchen Hawkins Estep, Biloxi, MS., Mother in law Muriel Holtzman, FT., Lauderdale, FL., Brother LT. Col. Ret. Terry L. Estep, Tavernier, FL., Nephews Clayton and Stephanie Estep and children Davis and Reagan, Peach Tree City, GA., Parker Estep, Atlanta, GA., Niece Sarah (Adam) Evans and children, Payton and Presley, Rogers, A.R. and numerous cousins.
Please join us for a ""Celebration of Life"" on July 9th at 11:00 a.m. in The Christian Life Center, Woolmarket Baptist Church, 12816 Lorraine Road, Biloxi, MS. There will be lunch to follow.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Miami Shores Village 10050 N.E. 2nd St., Miami Shores, FL. 33138. A park bench will be purchased in Jerry's memory.
