Mr. Homer Ray Dedeaux, age 91, a resident of Gulfport, MS, passed away on July 23, 2017, at his home in Bayou View.
Homer "Coach" Dedeaux was preceded in death by his parents Homer Dedeaux and Ida Mason Dedeaux of Silver Run, MS, his brothers Hubert and Herbert Dedeaux of Gulfport, MS, his sister Katherine Dedeaux Kennon of Gulfport, MS, his first wife Carol Cunningham of New Orleans, LA, his daughter Danielle Dedeaux, and his son Robert Charles Dedeaux.
He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Shirley Landrum Dedeaux - the love of his life, his children, Mozart Mark Dedeaux of Gulfport, MS, David Dedeaux of New York City, NY, Devin Dedeaux of Mandeville, LA, Devra Dedeaux of New Orleans, LA, and Dawn Dedeaux of New Orleans, LA, and his grandchildren, Arjeane Thompson, Marigny Thompson, Aidan Dedeaux, Zoe Thompson, Camille Dedeaux, Flora Dedeaux, Julian Dedeaux, and Theo Dedeaux.
Homer attended Gulfport High School from 1940-43 where he made All-State and All-Southern in football and All-State in basketball. He then served four years in the U.S. Navy, with stops in Guam, Saipan, the South Pacific and Japan. Upon his return, he attended Tulane University from 1947-51 and is a member of Tulane's All-Time football team as a center. While at Tulane he was nominated as Southeastern Conference Player of the Week on two occasions (LSU in 1947 and Notre Dame in 1950). Homer is also ranked 7th for interceptions in the Tulane record books.
After his graduation from Tulane, he took his first coaching job at Perkinston Junior College (now Gulf Coast) as a line coach in football and later as a head basketball coach. In 1953, he returned to Tulane as freshman football coach. In 1954, he became sales manager for radio station WVMI in Gulfport. During the period 1955-59, he returned to serve at Tulane in a recruiting capacity as an assistant to the athletic director.
He returned to Gulfport in 1964, and worked as a manager at the Bubba Oustalet Lincoln-Mercury automobile dealership. He has served as president of the West Harrison County Cancer Society and the Gulf Coast March of Dimes. He was also a past president of the Gulf Coast Chapter of the NFFHF as well as a past president of the Perkinston Junior College Alumni Association. "Coach" was also elected and served as a Harrison County Supervisor from 1985-87.
Dedeaux's past memberships include the American Legion Joe Graham Post 119, the Gulfport Rotary Club, the Elks Club and the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. He also served on the Board of Directors of the Gulfport Gridiron Club and has been active in the Gulfport peewee football program. He and his wife Shirley are members of the Trinity United Methodist Church in Gulfport.
The family would like to thank caregivers Tonya St. Amant, Jimmie Parrish, and Jesse Smith, Camilla Hospice, and family friend Sarah Hilburn.
A visitation for family and friends will be held on Wednesday, July 26, 2017, from 6 PM to 8 PM at RIEMANN FAMILY FUNERAL HOME, 11280 Three Rivers Road, Gulfport, Mississippi. The funeral service will be held on Thursday, July 27, 2017 at 11:00 AM at Trinity United Methodist Church, 5007 Lawson Avenue, Gulfport, Mississippi, 39507. Burial with military honors will follow at Evergreen Cemetery, Gulfport.
