Edmund Hilton Crane, Jr. of Gulfport, 84, died Sunday, October 19, 2014.
Dr. Crane was born in New Orleans, Louisiana. He attended Jesuit High School, Loyola University and Louisiana State University Medical School.
Dr. Crane is predeceased by a son, Mr. Martin Crane; a sister Mrs. Alexander McKeith (Ruth) Crighton and her husband Mr. Alexander McKeith Crighton; a brother, Mr. William Crane, and his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Edmund Hilton (Ruth) Crane.
Dr. Crane is survived by his wife of 58 years, Gwendolyn Crane of Gulfport; three daughters, Dr. Gwendolyn Crane Torp and her husband, Dr. Eric Torp of Biloxi; Miss Catherine Crane of Atlanta, Georgia; Mrs. Ruth Crane Matthews and her husband, Mr. Robert Shaw Matthews of Gulfport; and three sons: Dr. Edmund ""Ned"" Crane and his wife, Dr. Virginia Crane of Des Moines, Iowa; Mr. David Crane of Gulfport; Mr. Kevin Crane of Gulfport, MS. He is also survived by his grandchildren: Mrs. Andrew (Judith) Downs, Miss Adele Crane, Miss Susan Crane, Miss Jeanne Torp, Miss Anastasia Torp, Miss Trilby Matthews, Miss Annabella Matthews, Miss Sarah Matthews and Master Harry Crane.
Dr. Crane served in the United States Army from 1958 through 1960. He moved to Gulfport in 1962. He was in private practice from 1962 until his retirement in 2000. After retirement, he continued to practice medicine as a volunteer at the Bethel Free Clinic.
Dr. Crane served on the Board of the Mississippi Department of Mental Health. During his tenure on that Board, the Department dedicated a building in his honor at the South Mississippi Regional Center.
Dr. Crane was a member of St John the Evangelist Catholic Church, Gulfport. For several years, on an annual basis, he traveled to Mexico with his wife and other members of the parish to work with the Saltillo Mission.
Dr. Crane enjoyed fishing, sailing, wood working, baking, and traveling.
A visitation for family and friends will be held on Friday, October 24, 2014 from 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, Gulfport. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 AM on Saturday, October 25, 2014 at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church with a visitation for family and friends from 10:00 AM until the Mass. Interment will follow at St. Paul Cemetery, Pass Christian.
