Douglas Sherman Self

Douglas Sherman Self, 87, of Saucier, MS, passed away, Sunday, May 22, 2016.
Douglas was born December 15, 1928 in Gulfport, MS to Nola Adcock Self and Eli Self. He attended Gulfport schools after which he joined the U.S. Navy and U.S. Air Force. He served over 20 years of active military service and retired from the U.S. Air Force in 1966. Most of his military career was spent over seas serving during World War II, Korea, and Vietnam. After retiring from the service, Douglas worked at Brookley Air Force Base, Ingalls Shipbuilding, Gulf Coast Community Hospital and Gulf Oaks Hospital. Douglas enjoyed woodworking, riding motorcycles, fishing and doing for others. He loved serving the Lord at Grace Memorial Baptist Church where he taught Sunday school and served on many committees.
Douglas was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Orville, brother-in-laws George Cook and Chuck Vierling and nephew Chuckie Vierling. He is survived by his wife of 53 years Jeneane Vierling Self; his children, Sioux Sunbear of Gulfport, Renee Elvenhart of Biloxi, Kathy Parker and husband Joel of Lucas, TX, Jon Self and wife Jennifer of Fairview, TX; 8 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law Jim and Beth Vierling of Gulfport, Joan and Byron Brewer of Saucier, June Cooke of Warner Robbins, GA and Jean Bookout of Gulfport; and many nieces and nephews.
Visitation will begin at 10:00 am on Wednesday, May 25, 2016 at Grace Memorial Baptist Church followed by a celebration of life at 11:00 am. Burial will follow at Evergreen Cemetery in Gulfport. Memorials may be made to Grace Memorial Baptist Church or Disabled American Veterans.
The family would like to thank the nurses and assistants as well as the emergency department of Gulfport Memorial Hospital, and the Deaconess nurses for their excellent and loving care during the last few months.
