Alice Veronica Papania Carrubba, age 95, passed away peacefully surrounded by her loving family on July 29, 2017.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 40 years, Paul Joseph Carrubba; a daughter, Virginia Maria "Jennaree" Carrubba; her parents, Leon and Nellie Papania; her brothers, Luke, Leonard (Kathryn), Joe (Callie), Andrew (Dottie), and Bennett Papania; a sister-in-law, Polly Papania; a granddaughter, Jenna Marie Lizana; a grandson, Jacob Carrubba; and a great-grandson, Finian Luke Wilson.
Survivors include her loving children, Frances X. Carrubba (Milton) LeBlanc, Paula (Mike) Spears, Nellie (Walter) Abadie, Anna (Danny) Lizana, Alice (Mike) Necaise, Paul Carrubba, II, Leonard (Barbara Eloise) Carrubba, and Sharon Revette Mayer; her brothers, Eugene Papania and Bernard (Estelle) Papania; 2 sisters-in-law, Sue Papania and Catherine Carrubba; 17 grandchildren: Conny (Andy) Zeagler, Chante' (Shane) Anderson, Cherie (Ben) Carter, Michael Spears, Amy Spears Wilson, Betsy Spears, Luke Wilson, Marissa (Brandon) Ladner, Kyle (Rachel Harrison) Lizana, Scottie (Christy) Necaise, Shellie (Dalton) Smith, Eric (Sherry) Schmidlkofer, her caregiver, Jonna (Brad Streuding) Schmidlkofer, Paul (Haley) Carrubba, Alexander (JoAnne) Carrubba, Leon (Lindsey) Carrubba, Joseph Carrubba, Alicia (Austin Clark) Carrubba, and Lauren Carrubba; 23 great-grandchidren, Cailen and Alexis Zeagler, Shelby and Shana Anderson, Jordan and Dillon Desplas, Jacob and Brady Carter, Renna Ann Spears, Sullivan Michael, Fionnuala Majela, Tallulah Cabrini Wilson, Brennan Zane, Laithen Daniel, Adalyn Grace Ladner, Jenna and Morrgan Necaise, Marina Smith, David Lawrence, Savannah and Samantha Revels, Lisa Burkett, and David Leese; and many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Alice's father, Leon, was stationed with the U.S. Marine Corps in Pennsylvania where he met and married Nellie Courduff. When Alice was 2 years old, they moved from Pittsburgh, PA to Gulfport where she later worked at Gulfport Field as a notary during WWII. She was a pillar of St. Thomas Catholic Church/Schools and was a member of the Altar Society, served as president of St. Margaret's Daughters, and was a charter member of the St. Thomas Mother's Club which became the Carnival Association of Long Beach where she reigned as Grand Duchess in the 80's. She was an exceptional homemaker and seamstress and her home was always open to anyone where there was always a large pot on the stove and an extra plate at the table. She is loved and adored by her children and spoiled and worshipped by her brothers. She never lost her sense of humor or her ability to laugh at herself.
The family would like to give special thanks to her granddaughter, Jonna, for the exceptional care that she gave to her grandmother, and also the staff at Deaconess Hospice, especially Deborah Thomas and Mary Busby, for the care of Mrs. Carrubba.
Visitation will be on Tuesday, August 1, 2017, from 12 pm - 1:30 pm at St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church, 720 East Beach Blvd., Long Beach. The rosary will be recited at 1:30 pm and a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 2 pm in the church. Interment will be in Evergreen Cemetery.
